Merced River to Sacramento – 17 May 2022
We knew we had arrived in a big city again when we entered Sacramento and were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. Derek got rather annoyed as motorists would sneak up on a single lane and overtake on our right. It was quite unnerving.
Our RV park was situated behind a fairground. It was quiet this time of the year thought there were still quite a few RVs in the park. The events in the fairground start picking up in June and thats when it gets very busy. Our site was basically a large, shared parking lot with a box for utilities but a good base from which we could explore Sacramento.
We decided to start off in Old Sacramento. We were able to take Jax with us, fit in a walk and also see some history. The first thing that struck me as we entered downtown, was the sheer magnitude of the homelessness problem. That and the litter. It was very sad to see people – absolutely filthy and with torn clothes – lying everywhere. I didnt see any obvious shelters anywhere.
Old Sacramento was paved with cobblestone roads and wooden sidewalks. There were many old, restored buildings from the Gold Rush days which had been converted into shops and restaurants. The area was right by the Sacramento river.
