Montgomery to Delta – 12 March 2023

For a change of pace and something completely different, we spent a few days in the Cheaha State Park in Delta. It is the highest point in Alabama and located on the southernmost tip of the Appalachian mountain chain. Named by the Native American Creek nation – “Chaha” means high place. Love the solitude, the sounds of the birds and fresh mountain air. The first night we went looking for Pulpit Rock but the area was just covered in mist.

The landscape was quite different to where we had been before. Very tall, thin trees which of course this time of the year were completely bare and brown. Tons of leaves carpeted the forest floor. The second day the mist had cleared so we did some exploring of the Cheaha State park  by hiking to Bald Rock and then on to the Pinhoti trail. To get to Bald Rock you walk along this 1,520 ft boardwalk which ends atop the highest point in Alabama, providing a sweeping 180 degree view from the observation platform. We then took one of the many side trails just off of the boardwalk. Some of these trails parallel the elevated boardwalk, while others lead off into the wilder sections of the park.

With all the constant moving we lost track of time and ended up accidentally staying an extra night. Only realized it when our next stop phoned the following day and asked where we were, which led to a mad rush to pack up and get going again.
