Watson Lake to Teslin, Yukon – 30 June 2024
On the way to Teslin we had our first accident. As we crossed the Ranchero bridge, a large truck came over from the other side towards us. The back of the truck swung towards us and Derek swerved away to avoid a collision. As he did so the front of our RV collided with the metal barrier on the side of the road which resulted in the metal being pulled away from the body and deep scratches along the side. Luckily no other damage and when we reached our destination Derek was able to push it in and patch it with waterproof white tape. This will have to last until we get back to Victoria and can get it repaired.
We stayed at the Yukon Motel and Campground in Teslin, which was situated on the Teslin lake. The Motel ran its own restaurant and also had a small museum off to one side featuring stuffed animals from the region. It was interesting to be able to note the differences between the Grissly and the Black Bear, also the Mountain goat and Dall sheep and the Bison and the Musk ox.
There was not much to the campground – basically a large sanded area with connections. Unfortunately there was no easy access to the lake. We did enjoy having a restaurant though, so we ate out a couple of times and food was acceptable.
We did a couple of walks in the area, down to the public dock and down some roads and briefly visited the George Johnson museum on Canada day. George was a legendary trapper, photographer and entrepreneur who brought the first car to Teslin, a 1928 Chevrolet that is on display. With his camera, he captured the life of the inland Tlingit people of Teslin and Atlin, B.C., between 1910 and 1940.
