Amarillo, Texas to Tucumcari, New Mexico – 21 March 2024

We stayed overnight at Blaze-In Saddle RV park in Tucumcari, New Mexico.  Next door to where we were parked was a field, fenced off with barbed wire. I thought it was deserted till I saw this huge bull. I tried to sneak a photo but he saw me and was not in the least bit happy, in fact he started to make grunting noises and drool started to pour from his nose. Needless to say I made a very hasty retreat.
Tucumcari was originally called Ragtown, and used as a construction camp for the Pacific Railroad. The camp became known as “Six Shooter Siding”, due to numerous gunfights. It was renamed Tucumcari in 1908 after the nearby Tucumcari Mountain.
Having just passed through a couple of States where Marijuana was illegal – Tucumcari has made up for it with about 10 Marijuana shops just along the main road – even drive thrus (get your kicks on route 66).  We drove to the Route 66 monument and then parked in town and took a stroll in the area. The scenery in their historic town was like something out of an old cowboy movie, with relics of signs and cars and old Texaco gas stations.
