Cariboo to Vanderhoof, British Columbia – 11 June 2024
From Cariboo we drove to Vanderhoof, a small town with a population of approx. 5000. The Riverside Park Campground which we stayed in was alongside the Riverside Park, a popular day use camping area with a paved walking trail around the perimeter, a playground and large field with picnic tables and a two storey lookout across the Nechako River.
Vanderhoof is known for its White Sturgeon fish (famous for caviar), the largest freshwater fish in Canada having survived millions of years (since the age of the dinosaurs) relatively unchanged. The area is also known for hundreds of Migratory birds which nest along the Nechako River.
It was interesting to note that the largest Nechako White Sturgeon on record was caught and released on the Nechako River near Vanderhoof weighing 336 lbs and measuring 9.6 ft.
