College Park, Maryland to Gloucester, Virginia – 17 November 2023
Doswell, Virginia
Date: 13 – 16 November 2023
A quick trip down to Doswell, Virginia and a concentration on getting our books in order as we approach the end of our Furever Clean fiscal year. Derek had some maintenance to do on the RV so we hunkered down for the next 4 days and got caught up. Jax loved the campsite which was full of scurrying squirrels and had a lovely big dog park so we could play ball. The main attraction in this area is a theme park, which we were not particularly interested in visiting.
Being back in Virginia reminded me of their slogan “Virginia is for lovers.” I was curious as to what message they were trying to portray. It seems that the slogan is open to interpretation as in 1969 when they were trying to figure out a slogan they were thinking it was for lovers of mountaineering, lovers of history, lovers of the beach, lovers of breweries etc. It was the year of Woodstock so the term “lovers” was quite provocative so it stood out. So it was decided that people should just insert their own personalized meaning.
Gloucester, Virginia
Date: 17 – 20 November 2023
We were surprised how busy the Thousand Trails campsite was in Gloucester. We were situated just across the way from a dog park which was nice. The campground was huge with a large river on the side and several man made lakes inside the park as well. We went for a walk at Beaverdam Park which were filled with the most amazing fall colours. Afterwards we took a drive into the historic town of Gloucester. Mainly just the main road but some pretty neat buildings. I loved the Christmas wreath that was outside of the Fire Station – complete with fire hose, small ladder and axe. There was a life sized art sculpture of a young man sitting on a bench reading a newspaper – it was so realistic, I was expecting him to suddenly come to life like one of those mime artists. We stopped at the Sweet Tooth Cafe and had a delicious fall flavoured latte.
I met a couple at the dog park who had a one year old dog who was full of energy and got on with Jax like a house on fire. Initially he was over the top excited but once he had settled down, he was able to play very nicely with the dog – Nava. Also a rescue – looked like a combination between a Corgi face and a cattle dog body. Very fluffy and pretty girl. The owners were also full time travellers who lived in the States.
