Delta Junction to Tok, Alaska – 1 September 2024

The drive from Delta Junction to Tok was very scenic with fields of deep reds and yellows against the backdrop of browns, greens and whites from mountains. Fall was certainly on the way.

This time we stayed in the Sourdough Campground in Tok as opposed to The Tundra Campground we had stayed in when we first arrived in Alaska in June.

That evening we started getting everything ready to leave for Dawson City which we planned to do the next day, going via the town of Chicken. I had booked 3 nights accommodation at a hotel in Dawson City as we did not want to lug the RV over what we learned were extremely bad roads.

The following day, bags all packed and ready to go, we made an executive decision not to leave. The weather in Tok was bitterly cold and the border crossing that we needed to return through had already reported snow and could close at any time if weather got worse. If this was to occur, we would have to drive all the way back to Whitehorse from Dawson City and then all the way into Tok, Alaska again – a 21 hour deviation. It just wasn’t worth it. So we stayed another day in Tok, went for a nice walk with Jax in the afternoon along the walking/bicycle path through town and then went out for a last meal in Tok at Fast Eddy’s.

Our time in Alaska had finally come to an end.
