Flagstaff to Cottonwood, Arizona – 8 November 2025
From Flagstaff we made our way southeast to Cottonwood, where we spent a few peaceful days camping at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The town gets its name from the massive Fremont cottonwood trees that line the Verde River, shedding their fluffy white seeds across the paths like soft snowfall.
We took a lovely walk out to the three lagoons in the center of the park — each one larger than the last. Families were picnicking along the banks, kids were tossing lines into the water, and the whole area had such a relaxed, easygoing feel. The lagoons themselves were gorgeous, reflecting the golden autumn leaves and tall trees in their still, mirror-like surfaces. With herons, egrets, ducks, and even the occasional bald eagle, it’s a haven for birdlife and a wonderful place to unwind.
We had originally hoped to stay in Sedona, but it was fully booked — and now I understand why! Luckily Cottonwood was close by and made the perfect base for exploring the area.
Sedona is every bit as stunning as people say: surrounded by towering red-rock formations, brimming with art galleries, vibrant boutiques, and quirky cafés. We started our day with breakfast at the Pumphouse Station before wandering through the charming shops and galleries of Tlaquepaque, with its beautiful courtyards and Spanish-inspired architecture.
From there we drove up the steep road to the iconic Chapel of the Holy Cross, an extraordinary structure built right into the mountainside. Seeing it rise out of the red rock is truly a sight to behold.
With clear skies and perfect weather, it was time to hit the trails and soak in Sedona’s jaw-dropping scenery. We first visited Yavapai Vista, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Next, we headed to the trailhead at Bell Rock and walked the loop around Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte — a route filled with classic Sedona views at every turn.
On our way back to town, we stopped by Cathedral Rock to capture a few photos of its dramatic silhouette in the afternoon light. There are so many incredible formations in this area; I could easily have spent a week exploring the trails. Sedona really is a magical place.
We ended the day on the sweetest note possible — with a refreshing prickly pear gelato. Absolutely delicious and the perfect treat after a full day of sightseeing.
