Gloucester, Virginia to Weldon, North Carolina – 21 November 2023
Our next stop was an overnighter outside the Weldon Mills Distillery in Weldon, North Carolina. We parked near their brick factory against a side wall on the grass with 2 other trailers. Alongside us was the Roanoke river and a large park. The Distillery main office where they hold their tastings and sell their products was in a restored historic mill at the top of the park – such a beautiful building.
Weldon is known as the “Rockfish capital of the world.” The Rockfish are actually Striped Bass that swim up the Roanoke river each spring to spawn, providing great sport for fisherman.
After taking Jax for a run in the park we boarded the Distillery trolley bus for a tour. The tour started at the factory where we were shown all the casks, stills and fermentation tanks and provided with information on their fermentation process. Very interesting. After that we were driven to the Mill were we selected a number of tasters. I concentrated on the fruity sounding gins and vodka while Derek was more interested in the whisky and bourbon. I did however, really enjoy a caramel apple whisky with a sweet, fruity flavour. We ended up purchasing the Soldier Cut Whiskey, my Caramel Apple Whiskey and straight up Gin so we could flavour as we please.
After that we returned to the RV and had a quiet evening.
