Redding to Lincoln – 10 March 2022

We were sorry to say goodbye to Lincoln but looked forward to our next Harvest Host adventure. Bee-z-bees was a short distance from Redding seemingly in the middle of nowhere. We arrived in a blustery wind and parked a short way up their driveway.

The Romanian owners live on the property in their Solitude with their two small children. Their business is renting out their bees to neighbouring orchards and farms. They have chickens and goats and a couple of dogs in a penned area. Ultimately they plan to build a house and farm stall on their property but with increased pricing they have put these plans on hold.

The first day was so windy that we each kept to our RVs. We took Jax for a good run in their field and met the neighbouring horse who came over to the fence to say hello. Jax was very curious as it was the first time he had seen a horse but didnt bark at it.

Derek had accidentally not filled the tank with water so that was tough and once again we needed to run the generator at 3am in the morning.  We were awoken at about 9am with the sound of a small plane flying low over our RV. On lifting the blinds we saw a crop duster spraying a field across from the farm. We were so excited that we ran outside to film him – the owners probably thought we were nuts.

Later on we were able to watch the owner and his workers gathering honey, feeding their bees and cleaning the hives, and learned a lot about their business. We made sure to keep our distance but it was quite fascinating.  The horse next door ran over to greet us and we rewarded him with some carrots and apples.

We were able to buy some really nice beeswax candles, honey and freshly laid eggs from them. We learned that Beeswax candles are healthy to burn. They are hypo-allergenic, and can actually improve air quality! They burn with little to no smoke or scent and clean the air when lit. Beeswax is also biodegradable, making it a healthy choice for the environment too.

We really enjoyed our time at the farm and look forward to our next Harvest Host adventure.
