St John to Edmunston, New Brunswick – October 1 2023

Upper Queensbury, New Brunswick

Date: 30 September, 2023

We travelled from Rockwood in St John to Upper Queensbury for the night.  Not a bad campsite situated right on the Saint John River with nice views. It was quite full with a number of residential RVs.

Drove to a nearby park to see the Largest Axe in the World which is a proud symbol of the importance of forestry to the town of Nackawic. This small village is situated where the Nackawic stream meets the Saint John River. The Axe was built in 1991 to commemorate the selection of Nackawic as Forestry Capital of Canada and stands on the waterfront at 49 ft tall, 64ft long weighing an incredible 16,000 lbs.

It was a beautiful afternoon with several house boats floating on the the flat calm waters of the the St John river. We discovered a nice walk through a forest along the banks of the river, filled with the changing foliage colours.

The Campground was full of Staghorn Sumac flowers. These flowers are typically ornamental but have been used traditionally by native north americans in a variety of ways. The bark, leaves and fruit are all rich with tannin and used to tan hides. The leaves and fruit were boiled down to make ink and dried leaves were also used for smoking. The sap was used as a treatment for warts.

The sour Sumac berries are also a popular condiment in Middle Eastern cooking. You can even make tea out of it.

Back to Edmunston  and Camping Edmunston Campground again. This time the RV park was quite empty as it starts to wind down for the season. It was nice for Jax though as he could go for a good run around.  Tired from all the non stop travelling we just hung out by the RV for the rest of the day.
