Santa Nella to Nicolaus, California – 19 April 2024

In Nicolaus we stayed in Lake Minden at one of the Thousand Trail parks. A nice campground situated around the lake which was nice for walks. Nothing much to do in Nicolaus itself so we decided to visit Sacramento city (30 mins away) and hike along the Sacramento Riverwalk, which is located along the west bank of the Sacramento River. The walk provided a great view of the Sacramento skyline and as we wandered across the Tower Bridge we could see Old Sacremento. The gold painted Tower bridge is a vertical lift bridge across the Sacramento River, which links West Sacramento in Yolo County to the west, with the capital of California, Sacramento, in Sacramento County to the east.

Last time we were in Sacramento we explored the area, visited the railway museum and had a bite to eat at one of the restaurants. It was packed with people shopping, eating at the many restaurants, going on train excursions and riverboats. After stopping for some of my favorite pineapple dole ice cream at the Creamery, we headed out to one of the nearby dog friendly breweries for a cold one.

Jax has been having some issues with his paws and we discovered that he had lots of raw red spots on them and some of his pads were torn. This must have been from our last hike in Palm Desert. At the time, I had felt the ground and it did not seem hot but I guess it must have been too hot for him and as well, the terrain was pretty rocky. We carry some special pet hot spot spray and after bathing his feet, I sprayed the solution on and bandaged his feet. But he was not a happy camper, kept on licking the paws and pulling off the bandages. We cut down on his walks and also put his boots on. Hopefully his paws will recover quickly.
