Sebastian to Waldo, Florida – 19 February 2024

Our next stop was in Gainsville, Florida where we stayed at a smaller campsite (relative to some of the other ones we have stayed in) owned by a lovely Spanish couple.

Not too much to see here without driving further out, so we settled on a drive to see one of their “geological wonders” hoping at the same time to go for a good walk. The geological wonder was a sinkhole in the Devils Millhopper Geological State Park. We walked down a long wooden staircase to a platform to view the sink hole. What you see is a miniature rain forest at the bottom of a bowl shaped cavity 120 feet deep. The water filled cavity is surrounded by lush vegetation thanks to the small streams that trickle down the steep slopes of the limestone sinkhole.  It was a little under whelming unfortunately and the trails around the area rather short.

Apart from doing a bit of grocery shopping, that was all we had time for in Gainsville.
