Surrey to Victoria – 13 October 2024
After months on the road, we rolled back into Victoria just in time for Thanksgiving with the family. Sharing that festive meal felt like the perfect homecoming.
Instead of heading straight to our usual spot at Fort Victoria RV Park, we decided to try a few different campgrounds.
- Oceanside RV Resort: Close to the beach and ferry, with a fantastic fully enclosed dog park that Jax adored. Daily beach walks became part of our routine, though the neighbourhood wasn’t ideal for strolling since many dogs were unfenced.
- Salish Seaside RV Resort: A splurge right on Victoria’s Inner Harbour. We enjoyed harbourfront sunsets, floatplanes buzzing overhead, and a boardwalk into town—but it came with a hefty price tag.
- Fort Victoria RV Park: Eventually we returned to our tried-and-true winter spot, comfortable and familiar.
Staying Active in Winter
To keep ourselves busy through the dark, rainy season, we joined the Victoria Pickleball Club. A beginner’s course soon had us hooked, and we found ourselves playing almost daily, making friends, and staying fit.
Along the way, we squeezed in:
- A November birthday getaway to Whistler for Jo.
- Alden’s fire truck–themed first birthday party.
- A lively family Christmas in Fernwood, full of food, games, and tradition.
- Late Fall walk around Goldstream National Park.
- Numerous trail walks around Royal Rhodes University.
- Snowy January walks along the Galloping Goose and EN Trail with Jax, despite the chilly weather.
While our planned trip to Utah in March was cancelled due to political tensions, we shifted gears and planned a desert escape closer to home for now—Osoyoos.
Then before Christmas we had dinner with friends Simon and Julie and learned that Simon was planning to run the Moab 240miles in September. This sounded like a fantastic opportunity to hook up in Utah and to help out as Crew and possibly Pace Simon on one of his legs. Excited about the prospect of participating in such a fantastic event in Utah we started training walks on the trails around us.
