Trip Planning
After months of cold weather and COVID restrictions, we have been itching to travel to a warmer climate. So we decided it was time to bite the bullet and make our way south.
Planning our trip has been a real learning experience. Thank goodness for tools like Trip Wizard, which have made the planning process so much smoother. Being our first trip we have perhaps over prepared by pre-booking sites all the way down to California, across to Palm Springs and then back to Victoria again. As we are leaving fairly late in the season we are trying to get to California as quickly as possible, however as we are travelling with the animals, we feel that 3 hour travel time a day is the maximum we want to do – hence 30+ stops along the way.
We ended up purchasing a bunch of RV campsite memberships, we will see if this approach is the most cost effective way to travel. Harvest Host allows us to park at a variety of venues for free. Usually no hookups but a promise to purchase goods from the provider. We will be staying on wine farms, bee farms, a ranch and even in a museum parking lot. Certainly good for offsetting some of the higher priced rv parks. We also joined Thousand Trails which was an expensive membership but the benefits are great. You can stay for free at their resorts for up to 14 days with some restrictions. Other memberships we bought were KOA and Sams which offer 10% discounts and have campgrounds across US and Canada, as well as Passport America where you can get 50% off RV prices.
We plan to leave 28 February for the USA and be back in Canada 1 June and then spend the Summer and Fall in Canada. This plan takes us till end of August 2022.
