Watson Lake, Yukon to Muncho Lake, BC – 14 September 2024

The stretch of Alaska Highway to Muncho Lake Provincial Park from Watson Lake was stunning.  So many beautiful mountains and yellow scenery.

Along the way we saw a couple of herds of Bison along the side of the road. Several had babies. The Bison took no notice of us and we were able to stop the car alongside of them and take several photos. These Bison were introduced to the area around Nordquist lake in 1995 in an effort to restore their population. The Nordquist bison spend a lot of their time along the highway, sometimes blocking it altogether. It is known as the “Alaska Highway traffic jam.” Unfortunately many also get killed by traffic especially during winter when visibility is low and it is hard to stop quickly. Several of the Bison had large GPS trackers around their necks that have been installed by the Yukon and BC governments.

That night we stayed at the Northern Rockies Lodge which comprised both the Lodge, several Chalets and an RV campground right on the Lake.  The scenery was beautiful but it was windy and cold and the lake was very choppy.

After settling into our site we walked over to the Lodge for dinner. They were not quite open and wanted to charge $71 for a fixed menu, as well they could only get us in, in a couple of hours. At that stage we were famished so ordered from their takeout menu.  Food was not very exciting.  My power bowl salad with Quinoa probably only had a teaspoon of Quinoa and it was heavily drenched in salad dressing and topped with nuts and raisins that were so hard you could break your teeth on them.  Derek didn’t fare much better with the burger but at least his Fries were crispy.

The following morning after packing up the RV I set off with Jax to walk around Muncho Lake to the provincial campground called MacDonald that we had tried to get into to, but couldn’t as their sites were too small. Lovely views of mountains around the lake which was a turquoise colour.
